Abstract
This preliminary study was to investigate the effectiveness of improving self-regulating capacities for people with transgender, gender non-conforming, and gender expansive (TGNCE) identity. Twenty-two TGNCE people were randomized into Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) skills training group or Somatic Experiencing (SE) training group and participated in each eight-week group interventions. The experiences of hate violence and micro-aggression were measured in advance, and post-traumatic stress symptoms, depressive symptoms, emotion dysregulation, self-esteem, and social stigma were measured at pre- and post- treatment, and at 4-weeks follow up. Correlation analysis showed that micro-aggression experience had a significant positive correlation with social stigma. In DBT skills group, participants reported improvements in emotion dysregulation, self-esteem, and social stigma at post-treatment and follow up. There were improvements in depression post-treatment, however, this did not maintain at follow up. There were no changes in post-traumatic stress. In SE group, participants reported improvements in emotion dysregulation and self-esteem at post-treatment, however, it did not maintain at follow up. There were no changes in post-traumatic stress, depression, or social stigma. Comparing DBT and SE, significant differences in effectiveness were not found. Generalization of skills in real life may be the key to effectiveness. This study is meaningful in that it revealed how micro-aggression affect the mental health of TGNCE people, and showed that DBT skills training may be promising.
